Studies in Word-Association

Listen free to the public-domain LibriVox recording of Jung and his collaborators’ experimental studies of word association and emotionally charged complexes.

About This Recording

These studies document the association experiments that helped establish Jung’s early reputation. Timed responses, unusual answers, repetitions, and other disturbances were examined as possible signs of emotionally charged complexes.

The historical experiments matter because they connect Jung’s later theoretical language with observable research procedures. They do not, however, function as a do-it-yourself diagnostic test.

Listening Guide

Listen for the difference between the observed response and the interpretation placed upon it. Note how experimental controls, personal history, and examiner judgment interact. Use the recording with the site’s entries on complexes, association, projection, and research limitations.
