Shadow Work Prompts
Grounded Shadow Work prompts for examining reactions, projections, avoided qualities, recurring patterns, and personal responsibility.
Purpose
Support structured self-reflection without treating every uncomfortable emotion as hidden truth or encouraging unsupported interpretations.
Instructions
Choose one prompt. Describe a specific event before interpreting it. Separate what you observed from what you inferred, then identify your feelings, impulses, assumptions, and actions. End with one responsibility you can actually take.

Prompts about strong reactions
- What exactly happened, and what part of my account is interpretation rather than observation?
- Which quality in the other person produced the strongest reaction in me?
- Where does that quality appear in me openly, indirectly, or in an opposite form?
- What legitimate boundary or value might my reaction also be protecting?
- What evidence would weaken my current interpretation?
Prompts about persona and approval
- Which role do I work hardest to maintain?
- What would I fear others seeing if that role failed?
- Which ordinary human need does my public identity leave little room for?
- Where do I confuse being useful, agreeable, strong, spiritual, rational, or independent with being whole?
Prompts about recurring patterns
- What situation keeps repeating across different relationships or settings?
- What do I reliably expect other people to do?
- How might that expectation shape my behavior before the other person responds?
- What feeling, request, or limit do I avoid expressing directly?
- What is one small experiment that would interrupt the pattern without blaming either side?
Prompts about disowned strengths
- Whose confidence, creativity, discipline, tenderness, or authority do I dismiss?
- What would responsible expression of that quality look like in my own life?
- What belief tells me I am not allowed to possess it?
Close the exercise
Write one sentence about what remains uncertain, one sentence about your own responsibility, and one concrete action that does not depend on proving your interpretation correct.
