Symbolic Interpretation Comparison Worksheet
A private browser worksheet for comparing three interpretations while preserving literal observation, context, counterevidence, reality, and ethical boundaries.
Purpose
To prevent premature certainty by separating observation from interpretation, comparing competing hypotheses, and keeping concrete facts and boundaries in charge of action.
Instructions
Complete the grounding check first. Record the experience literally, add personal and cultural context, compare three readings with evidence for and against, and end with a provisional conclusion and modest next step.

Private comparison worksheet
Compare symbolic interpretations without forcing certainty
Preserve the literal record, collect context, test three hypotheses, and keep reality and boundaries in charge of action.
A symbolic interpretation cannot establish external facts, diagnose another person, reveal consent, predict events, or override safety, evidence, law, medical care, or another person’s stated boundaries.
What Is the Symbolic Interpretation Comparison Worksheet?
The Symbolic Interpretation Comparison Worksheet is a private browser tool for comparing three possible readings of a dream, image, coincidence, repeated pattern, or emotionally powerful event.
It prevents the first compelling explanation from silently becoming certainty. The worksheet keeps literal observation, personal context, cultural context, evidence, counterevidence, concrete boundaries, and action in separate places.
Use the Grounding Check First
Complete the Symbolic Interpretation Grounding Check before using this worksheet. Any gap involving reality, safety, consent, evidence, or another person’s boundaries takes priority over a symbolic reading.
Why Compare Interpretations?
Images are often overdetermined: they may carry several personal, cultural, emotional, and situational associations at once. James Hillman encouraged close attention to an image before translating it. Jungian amplification also works best when it expands possibilities without turning a parallel into proof.
Comparison makes uncertainty visible. An ordinary explanation can sit beside a symbolic one, and both can be tested against what is actually known.
Five Stages
- Preserve the literal record: distinguish observation from later inference.
- Collect context: record personal associations, recent influences, and cultural setting.
- Compare three hypotheses: give each reading evidence, counterevidence, and revision conditions.
- Protect reality and boundaries: state what interpretation cannot override or establish.
- Choose a provisional conclusion: identify a modest, evidence-based next step.

Important Limits
- A meaningful coincidence is not proof of an external message.
- A dream image cannot diagnose another person or reveal their motives.
- Mythological parallels must retain cultural and historical context.
- Emotional intensity does not establish prediction, recovered memory, or supernatural certainty.
- Medical, legal, financial, relationship, and safety decisions require appropriate evidence and qualified advice.
Make Rival Hypotheses Compete
Do not list alternatives merely as a formality. For each interpretation, identify the details it explains, the details it misses, and evidence that would weaken it. Include at least one ordinary explanation and one reading that challenges the preferred story. The best provisional account may combine causes, but it should not survive by becoming so vague that every possible outcome confirms it.
